UCLA Football: Position Grades for win over Coastal Carolina
Special Teams: A
In a game that was too close for comfort, the special teams ended up being a pivotal unit. While Coastal Carolina’s didn’t play at a high level, UCLA’s absolutely did.
Kicker RJ Lopez was perfect on the night. He nailed both of his field goal attempts, including a 47-yarder. He was also 3-for-3 on his extra points, bringing his total to nine points.
Punter Will Powers was pretty much perfect too. He punted twice and both were downed inside the 20-yard line.
Overall Team Grade: C+
There were strong individual performances up and down the roster, but individual strength doesn’t always translate to team strength. This game was just closer than it needed to be.
The Bruins entered this game as a 15-point favorite, so they did meet expectations, but it took a 13-point burst in the fourth to do so. Through three quarters, they only led the Chanticleers by a single point.
With Dante Moore’s explosion onto the scene, hopefully, UCLA will play a more complete game next week at San Diego State. This team has the pieces to be really good, but they’ll need to put it all together to be great.
