Go Joe Bruin takes a look at potential depth charts for the UCLA football team as we analyze the defensive backs.

In the last several seasons, the UCLA football team has been exceptional in the defensive backfield. Recruiting and development of this position group were some of the best in the Jim Mora era and that continues with Chip Kelly and Jerry Azzinaro.

The good thing about this position group (as the team collectively transitions) is that the talent and depth will keep some consistency.

But who will lead the charge in 2018? We tell you as we take a look at the potential depth chart which is full of both experienced upperclassmen and studly young DBs.

Right Cornerback

  1. Darnay Holmes, 5-10, 198, So.
  2. Colin Samuel, 6-2, 205, R-Jr.
  3. Jay Shaw, 5-11, 191, R-Fr.
  4. Elisha Guidry, 5-11, 182, Fr.
  5. Zack Huffstutter, 5-10, 190, Fr.

The Bruins had a pleasant surprise emerge early in 2017. Former 5-star standout Darnay Holmes was a viable threat on the right side of the field. Holmes was a hard-hitting aggressive corner that showed absolutely no fear for a young player. Not only could he lay the boom, but he had excellent field vision which helped him catch a team-high three interceptions last season and they were not by accident.

Holmes has a knack for sniffing out what the offense is doing. What is even better is that his reaction is quick which has helped him to be one of the more exciting players to watch on defense. This is perfect for the new style defensive coordinator Jerry Azzinaro wants to run.

Behind Holmes is Colin Samuel, a player that has the height and length to give his opposition trouble. He played in all 13 games last season, though mostly as a reserve. Still, he showed that he could be a solid defender and that should only improve in 2018.

The Bruins also have a lot of youth, and not just at the corner position, but throughout the entire secondary. Jay Shaw showed good progress during the spring and is expected to receive some playing time this season. Guidry is a true freshman that plays very physical. He could get time on the field, though the Bruins might have enough depth, so Guidry could take advantage of the new redshirt rule.
