1. The Doors

When you think of UCLA and music, several acts, artists, and composers will jump into your thoughts, including the nine mentioned in the previous slides, but I can guarantee that the one constant is The Doors.

The story of The Doors begins with a meeting of Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek on Venice Beach in the summer of 1965. Though both were students of the UCLA School of Theater, Film, and Television, this was the first time, as the story goes, that they had spoken at length. It was during this historic conversation that they had decided to form a band. Morrison had been writing lyrics that summer, which happened to be just after he graduated from UCLA.

"Now, I’m going to love you Till the heavens stop the rain I’m going to love you Till the stars fall from the sky for you and I"

Excerpt from “Touch Me” from the album The Soft Parade

Manzarek was a keyboardist that was in another musical act but felt compelled to work with Morrison. Shortly after this, guitarist Bobby Kreiger and drummer John Densmore had joined and just like that, The Doors were conceived. This would be the lineup for the next six years until Morrison’s untimely death in 1071, yet in that time, they made such an impact on the music community that their art still resonates with music lovers to this day.

Their style of music had infused rock, folk, jazz, blues and poetry which has not seen an equal to this day. In that time they played as a quartet, they had released eight albums.

Not only are they one of the most beloved rock bands of all time, but the marching band of Morrison and Manzarek’s alma mater often plays their hit song, “Touch Me” at several sporting events. It is even the intro song to the UCLA podcast, ‘The UCLA B Team’. Bruin greatness recognizes Bruin greatness.
