In episode 169 of the ‘What’s Bruin Show’, we take a look at UCLA basketball and what it means now that three players are returning, some UCLA football tidbits and UCLA softball’s journey to the Women’s College World Series.

In this latest episode, Jake Merrifield and I welcome guest host Alicia de Artola, site expert for Reign of Troy, to fill in for our regular co-host as Bill Shirley is on assignment. This gave us a chance to talk about all things UCLA basketball and football, but with a USC perspective.

We start out with an overview of UCLA softball which has not only made it into the Women’s College World Series, but has the best player in the nation leading them to victory. Rachel Garcia, slugger and pitcher extraordinaire, was recently named the USA Softball Player of the Year and we talk a little bit about her contributions.

Garcia proved last weekend why she is the best in the nation as she helped her Bruins to a series sweep of Arizona in the Super Regionals. The Bruins begin the WCWS today in Oklahoma City as they start out against Florida State in a double-elimination bracket.

We then go over a few odds and ends with the UCLA football team. Not a lot of news to report, but rather general perspectives on the Bruins as they head into the 2018 season as we are within 100 days until kickoff.

Did you hear the news? UCLA basketball has three freshmen returning as Jaylen Hands, Kris Wilkes and Cody Riley have withdrawn their name from the NBA Draft and will be back in Westwood next season. We look at how the team is shaping up and what this means for UCLA in 2018-19.

We then finish up with some UCLA-USC cross talk about the upcoming football season. De Artola gives us her opinions on the Trojans and what to expect (which we guarantee you will not expect) and what could become of the season for both UCLA and USC.
