The UCLA Basketball team filled their recently vacated assistant coaching position as Tyus Edney has been promoted from Director of Operations.

The UCLA Basketball team might have lost another vital piece of their program from the 2016-17 season, but they quickly solved that issue as Tyus Edney has been promoted from within the coaching staff and is the new assistant coach.

Edney was hired in 2010 by former Bruin coach Ben Howland to the role of Director of Operations. Edney was retained by current Head Coach Steve Alford in 2012 when he took over the Bruins.

As of Friday morning, Edney now has a bigger role with the team as he takes over as an assistant coach for the recently departed Ed Schilling who left last week to take a position with Indiana and new Head Coach Archie Miller.

Per UCLABruins.com, Alford stated, “With Tyus, you’re talking about an elite guard, back in his day, who helped UCLA win a national championship and has accumulated a wealth of knowledge. He will be a tremendous asset to our program as an assistant coach, and we’re very confident that he’s going to significantly impact our team in every aspect.”

Edney was a vital piece of the 1995 National Championship team, the last time UCLA was able to win one of their 11 titles. He played in the NBA and in Europe before heading back to UCLA underneath Howland.

Edney brings a lot of experience and knowledge to the position which will help the Bruins going forward. He also knows what Alford expects, so there should be a smooth transition into the role. Congratulations, Coach Edney!
