UCLA continued to load up at a major position of need on Wednesday, as the Bruins hauled in the commitment of 4-star wide receiver Dymond Lee (West Hills, CA/Chaminade). Lee chose UCLA over schools like Colorado (where his brother Donovan plays), Miami, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Washington.

Lee has been on the radar of Southern California recruitniks since 2013, when, as a sophomore, Lee joined with Brad Kaaya to lead Chaminade to an improbable CIF-Southern Section title, with a memorable victory over a star-studded, Adoree’ Jackson-led Gardena Serra team in the championship game. Since then, Lee’s acrobatics and dynamism have been somewhat taken for granted as it became clear how truly special this group of local receiver recruits is and Lee became somewhat lost in the shuffle of the newer and shinier names emerging around him.

Make no mistake though, Lee’s upside is still tremendous. He’s absolutely electric in the open field, has good hands, and has remarkable body control and concentration when elevating for jump balls.

An interesting twist to Lee’s commitment is the revelation that Lee is planning to start out at UCLA as a quarterback:

Lee told Bruin Report Online that “I honestly loved everything that I saw [at UCLA], but I wasn’t sure if I could make the decision, but then recently they extended the offer as a dual-threat quarterback and that kind of pushed it over the top. So I decided to commit today.” He also added that “Obviously I still have the skills that I’ve built up as a receiver, which I could use later on, but right now I’m 100% a quarterback.”

The likelihood is that Lee will get the Devin Fuller treatment, coming in as a quarterback only to move to his more natural position of wide receiver fairly quickly once it becomes clear where he’s more likely to thrive in college. Once Lee joins the receiver ranks at UCLA, he will be lining up alongside fellow commits Darian Owens (Fresno, CA/Clovis West) and Demetric Felton (Temecula, CA/Great Oak), with targets like 4-star WR Steffon McKnight (San Diego, CA/Mira Mesa) and Dylan Crawford (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Santa Margarita Catholic) still in the mix to join that trio as well.

Welcome to Westwood, Dymond!
