Despite Losing In The NCAA Tournament, UCLA Women’s Soccer Is Still #1
It was a tough day for a lot of Bruins on Friday, none more than those associated with #1 UCLA Women’s Soccer. The Bruins, in trying to defend their first National Championship, lost 2-1 against #2 Virginia Cavaliers. UCLA had to play catch-up in a game where Virginia went up 2-0 in the middle of the second half. Though Bruins netted a goal a few minutes after the Cavalier’s game-winning goal, UCLA could not get the equalizer to send it to extra time.

With that, UCLA loses their first game of the season and is eliminated from the NCAA Tournament.
But we are not here to dwell on that, albeit sad. We are here to give our thanks to a team that has dominated the entire season!
The Bruins claimed their first ever Championship last season in head coach Amanda Cromwell‘s first year in Westwood. With that, the Bruins were the unanimous #1 team in the nation in the preseason and never let go of that ranking. They rode that #1 all the way to the NCAA Tournament where the got the overall #1 seed. Let us not forget, they finished the season…
21-1-2
Impressive, indeed. But even more impressive were the incredible number of feats they accomplished along the way. Here are some of the more incredible achievements per uclabruins.com:
- Goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland sets new NCAA record for all-time shut-outs with 55
- Rowland sets the NCAA record for single-season shut-outs with 19
- Rowland set a school record for consecutive shut outs with 10
- UCLA set a school record with a 44-game unbeaten streak
- Their 44-game unbeaten streak is the sixth best in NCAA history
- UCLA set a school record for shut-out minutes with 969
Fantastic. But that is not all. Several Bruins got individual honors for the year, on the field and in the classroom!
Though it is sad to see the season end, it was great to follow the Bruins on their title defense. Until next season…
GO BRUINS!
