UCLA continued its recent roll on the recruiting trail on Thursday night, reeling in the commitment of its first defensive back in the 2015 class: 3-star Texan Will Lockett (Manvel, TX/Manvel). The Bruins were the pick for Lockett over Missouri.
As profiled on Go Joe Bruin’s Defensive Recruiting Big Board recently, Lockett has had a great deal of interest in UCLA for a while. In fact, he has been rumored to be a UCLA lean and potential UCLA commit since he attended UCLA’s Elite Camp in Westwood last month.

UCLA defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin has a widely-known preference for big, physical corners that he can put out on an island and Lockett, a spindly 6-foot, 180-pound athlete who can hit like a truck and also plays basketball for Manvel HS, certainly fits the Coach Meat mold. In fact, the first minute of Lockett’s HUDL film consists entirely of Lockett coming up in support on stretch runs and passes and absolutely crushing ball carriers.
Lockett’s physicality will mesh well with UCLA’s defensive philosophy, which emphasizes athletes that fly to the ball and tackle well. In fact, his instincts in coming off his receiver and making plays on the ball in the secondary are reminiscent of Ishmael Adams.
Lockett looks to be a very good fit for UCLA and his addition — with notable remaining targets in the defensive backfield such as DeChaun Holiday, Iman Marshall, Quenton Meeks, and Marvell Tell still on the board for the Bruins — will hopefully be a sign of great things to come in the next few months for Coach Martin and UCLA’s recruiting efforts.
Welcome to Westwood, Will!
