Go Joe Bruin Interview: Meet The ‘What’s Bruin’ Podcast Creators

Do you need your fix of UCLA news and information? Do you want an independent and unfiltered brand of Bruin talk? Look no further than ‘What’s Bruin’, an indie podcast created and developed by UCLA Alumni, Jacob Merrifield and Bill Shirley.

In this piece, Go Joe Bruin interviews these lovers of UCLA sports and talks about how this all came about..

GJB: So guys, what’s ‘What’s Bruin’?

Jake: ‘What’s Bruin’ is a podcast all things UCLA sports, that’s what Bill says at the beginning of every show.

Bill:  “Anything and Everything, Bruin Sports”.

Jake: And a bunch of other crap I think of on the side.

GJB: How and why did [What’s Bruin] come about?

Bill: We have been wanting to do this for years. Literally, years. Jake and I have tried to do this, twice before.

Jake: Yes, once before. A terribly failed attempt.

Bill: It is something that has been brewing, no pun intended, for some time and thank you Mike [W.R.] for being the producer extraordinaire, to get this all together.

Jake: Yeah because, me and Bill usually spend a lot of time talking about UCLA football which usually turns into an argument. When people are around us listening to us, we have always had a good reaction to that. People like hearing me bust Bill’s chops and people like hearing what Bill has to say, so it sounded like a good idea to us.

GJB: Why should people listen?

Bill: If you’re a Bruin fan… if you are not a Bruin fan, I don’t know how much appeal it will have to you, but if you are a Bruin fan, this is probably, I’m going to stick my neck out there and say “the best Bruin podcast out there”. It really is, because we have a great mix of everything on here. We have a great mix of, not just football, which [other podcasts] might be. It’s football, it’s basketball, it’s other Bruin sports, it’s every Bruin sport out there. Then we mix in our own LA flavor to it. We have our own chemistry that is really good. So, its something that is just a really good vibe between the three of us and those that we bring on. Our guest hosts as well, and because of that, it’s a good show.

Jake: Yeah, I think we do a good job. I think you are going to get the information you want out of Bruin sports, but we don’t take ourselves so seriously and get into too much of the minutiae of it all. And I think our podcast just sounds really nice. And we have funny drops. And we have interesting segments to not keep it so serious.
