Preview: The UCLA Bruins have began their season with offensive explosion after offensive explosion. After their second bye week in four weeks, UCLA has emerged as the Pac-12 South favorite, with Arizona State and USC looking considerably less intimidating than the Bruins.

The Bruins’ first Pac-12 game is a bit of a challenge: The state of Utah has not been kind to UCLA this millenium, with the Bruins going winless in road games against BYU and Utah. The last time UCLA played the Utes in Rice-Eccles Stadium, the Bruins found themselves flailing against Utah on a snowy November night. Although Salt Lake City won’t be a frozen tundra come 7:30 p.m., the weather won’t be favorable form the Bruins of sunny Los Angeles; with a forecast predicting 44 degree weather and plenty of rain, this could be a sloppy game that works against UCLA’s favor.

The Utes have improved from a year ago, too, with the offense seeing significant progress due to the playcalling of offensive coordinator Dennis Erickson. The Utes’ defense, though, has regressed.

Prediction: UCLA 31, Utah 17
