Head UCLA Football coach Jim Mora officially announced the hirings of Kenney Polamalu, Marques Tuiasosopo and Rip Scherer to the staff.
Though it had originally been reported over the weekend, UCLA Football Head Coach Jim Mora has made the hiring of several offensive coaches official today, pending UC Regent approval.
As reported, the Bruins have promoted Kennedy Polamalu to offensive coordinator after two years as the Bruin’s running backs coach.
Marques Tuiasosopo has also been hired as Mora poached him from USC and will take over as the new QB coach as well as take on the duties of the passing game coordinator. The Bruins also hired long time coach Rip Scherer to handle tight ends.

With these hires, Mora looks to alter the offense and add different elements to their game for next season.
David Woods of Bruin Report Online had quoted Mora saying, “As we continue to evolve as a program and tailor our philosophies and schemes to the strengths of our players, what you will see is a multifaceted offense incorporating tight ends and fullbacks into our schemes.”
The last few years, UCLA Football has been playing in the spread offense under former OC Noel Mazzone. Though it was highly successful during the Brett Hundley years, the offense seemed to stall this last season.
Though true freshman QB Josh Rosen had a record breaking year, late in the season there were several times he was unable to march the offense down the field, which was not necessarily his fault. A lot of blame for the lackluster offense fell on Mazzone whose play calls became quite predictable.
With this slight shift in the offensive mindset, we will most likely see more dynamic offensive schemes, which could include more power formations, especially if they are planning to utilize tight ends and full backs.
Though the Bruins have to land more players for these positions (UCLA currently does not have a tight end on their roster), it seems that this is a good direction for the Bruins to go in.
