The #7 UCLA Softball team must have used their April 5th 10-0 loss against #2 Oregon as bulletin board material because the Bruins dismantled the Ducks 7-1 in the first round of the double-elimination bracket in the NCAA Women’s College World Series.

UCLA got things going when catcher Stephany LaRosa smashed her 20th home run of the season to put the Bruins up 1-0 in the 2nd inning. A few moments later Gabrielle Maurice matched it with a blast to left to make it 2-0 UCLA.

During the top of the 3rd, some inclement weather delayed the game for 0ver 30 minutes, which included rain and lightning. When the Bruins and Ducks got back into it, they were locked in a stalemate for the next three innings.

In the top of the 6th, Mysha Sataraka broke that when she got two RBIs on a hit to right field which brought in Allexis Bennett and Ally Carda for UCLA, putting them up 4-0. The floodgates were definitely opening because shortly after that, Maurice, Sam Duran and Grace Goulder scored to increase the lead, 7-0.

Oregon’s Koral Costa had scored in the bottom of the 7th to avoid the shutout, but it was the only run Oregon produced as they fell 7-1.

UCLA next plays on Friday at approximately 6:30 p.m. PT against #3 Michigan who beat #6 Alabama 5-0. Oregon continues into the losers bracket to play the Crimson Tide. In the other bracket, #1 Florida beat #8 Tennessee 7-2 while #5 LSU beat #4 Auburn 6-1.
