facebooktwitterreddit

The College Basketball division of our parent network, Fansided, has listed the 75 Greatest College Basketball Programs Of All-Time and your UCLA Bruins come in third in their statistic-based rankings. The list was based on a point system that takes into account various post-season successes as conference championships, tournament wins, FInal Four appearances and National Championships. One of the main factors of this break down was to also include mid-major schools to recognize the triumphs of smaller programs. It was a formidable list, but was UCLA worthy of #3 and not #1?

  • As stated before, the list takes into consideration the all-time success of each program, and though your Bruins have 11 National Championships, 17 Final Fours, 19 Elite Eights, 28 Sweet Sixteens, 44 tournament appearances and 37 conference championships, it was no match for the Kentucky Wildcats and the Kansas Jayhawks who were ranked first and second, respectively.

In truth, Both the Kentucky and Kansas programs have had a lot more success lately. Before last season, the Bruins were in a bit of a bind for some years. A recent coaching change lead to the hiring of new Head Coach Steve Alford who takes on the task of bringing the Bruins back to elite status. He did well in his first season, but an exodus of key players and a top recruiting class leaves this UCLA squad with a lot of questions gong into the 2014-15 season.

FYI, the rest of the Top 10 programs on Fansided’s list are as follows: 4. North Carolina, 5. Duke, 6. Louisville, 7. Connecticut, 8. Indiana, 9. Cincinnati and 10. Arizona.
