From Spaulding Field: Yes, More Bruin Football Briefs

Thanks once again to the L.A. Times, which I read every morning and have done for around 30 years, for this info…

The safety position for UCLA’s defense is hurting right now, as with Dietrich Riley, Tony Dye, and Alex Mascarenas out, they have to go to their third stringers against Arizona State tomorrow.

You think quarterback Brock Ostweiler isn’t salivating?

I can just hear ASU coach Dennis Erickson and the Sun Devils’ offensive coordinator now: “Throw deep and pick on their safeties!”

The encouraging news is, those third stringers have done well for the Bruins to this point, particularly Tevin McDonald – I think his three interceptions against Cal last week speak for itself.

Stan McKay has played admirably at safety as well, making five solo tackles against the Bears.

It will be up to McKay and McDonald to help keep Ostweiler and the Arizona State passing game in check and not let them get tons of yardage through the air; with they way they’ve performed, I think they’ll be up to the challenge.

Meanwhile…

Quarterback Richard Brehaut has been cleared to practice with the Bruins next week by his doctors.

And…

Standout punter Jeff Locke and defensive end Iuta Topa are listed as probable for the ASU game tommorrow at the Rose Bowl, as they are both dealing with injuries, Locke with his shoulder and Tepa with his back.

A reminder:  The game is at 4:30 p.m. at the Rose Bowl and will be televised by Versus.

The golf course north of the Rose Bowl and Lot H on the south of it will open for tailgating six hours before kickoff – 10:30 a.m. There will be a Food Court and a Fan Zone on Lot H for everyone’s enjoyment.
