1999 Rose Bowl: McNown couldn’t do it again

Bob Toledo’s coaching tenure peaked with the 1998 Pac 10 title. The Bruins were a perfect 8-0 in conference play on their way to the Rose Bowl. They had just one loss in the regular season and climbed as high as No. 2 in the AP Poll.

UCLA’s second loss of the year came in the Rose Bowl to Barry Alvarez and the Wisconsin Badgers 38-31. Ron Dayne tied a Rose Bowl record with four rushing touchdowns for the Badgers, and this time Cade McNown couldn’t engineer a comeback win.

McNown was drafted 12th overall in the NFL Draft to the Chicago Bears in the Spring of 1999 and the next year UCLA fell to 4-7 and did not qualify for a bowl.
