1998 Cotton Bowl: McNown’s comeback
After taking over the program, Bob Toledo injected life very quickly. In just his second season, he led the Bruins to a 10-2 record and a 29-23 Cotton Bowl win over Texas A&M.
The Aggies got out to a 16-0 lead in the second quarter, but UCLA quarterback Cade McNown responded with a 22-yard touchdown pass before the end of the first half to give his team momentum. Then in the third quarter, McNown threw for another touchdown and ran one in. The Bruins put the finishing touches on the comeback and the 10-win season with a Ryan Neufeld 5-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion in the fourth.
After a 5-6 record in his first season, Toledo had the program back on track after it faded at the end of the Donahue era.
