It was perfect Week 1 for the Pac 12 and the final Week 1 for their conference, at least as currently constructed. UCLA took part in the festivities beating Coastal Carolina 27-13 and Chip Kelly got to see two new quarterbacks, Ethan Garbers and Dante Moore who both took snaps in the win. As Kelly decides who will be his full-time QB1 the Bruins will try to keep winning in non-conference with the 2-0 San Diego State Aztecs up next.

UCLA will be on the road visiting Brady Hoke’s Aztecs who beat Idaho State last week 36-28 with a very impressive game on the ground.

UCLA vs. San Diego State Key Players to Watch

UCLA

J.Michael Sturdivant WR: Last season, the 6-foot-3 Sturdivant had a strong freshman season at Cal and he looked like he may have an even better year as a Sophomore at UCLA. After posting a season with 65 catches for 755 yards and seven touchdowns last year, he began 2023 with five grabs for 136 yards and a touchdown. With Jake Bobo in the NFL, the Bruins need a new No. 1 receiver, no matter who is at QB and Sturdivant has stepped up so far.

San Diego State

Jaylen Mayden QB: San Diego State finished 112th in passing offense last season with Mayden as their primary QB. This season looks like it could be much of the same, but Mayden can get it done with his legs. Last year he ran for 231 yards and three touchdowns, but this season he is already at 166 rushing yards through two games with two touchdowns on the ground. He has only thrown for 251 yards and two touchdowns.

UCLA vs. San Diego State Prediction and Pick

San Diego State benched Braxton Burmeister last year in favor of Mayden to get a better passing game and it really hasn’t changed much. Mayden was okay last season, but they were 112th in passing offense and last week against Idaho State they only threw for 87 total yards. They were able to have success on the ground, running for 302 yards, but that won’t be so easy this week.

UCLA was 36th in rushing defense last season and last week they held Coastal Carolina to 56 rushing yards. That’s a team that averaged about 170 rushing yards a game last season with a dual-threat QB in Grayson McCall and they abandoned the run game with their lead running back, Reese White only getting 2.6 yards per carry.

Now, to cover this spread UCLA is going to have to decide on a quarterback. Last week, Garbers, the veteran, threw two interceptions and went 10-for-17 while the five-star freshman, Dante Moore went 7/12 for 143 yards and two touchdowns with just one pick. Moore should eventually win this job, but whoever is QB1 just needs to protect the ball.

UCLA beat Coastal Carolina by 14 points while turning the ball over three times. They gained 7.0 yards per play for the game. The Bruins are going to cover this spread even on the road as long as they can slow down the run and protect the ball a bit better.

Pick: UCLA -14
