The Breakdown

This week, 110 teams were evaluated. It’s conference championship week, so I’ve made my spreadsheet a little more exclusive. To be considered for the tournament this week, a team must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  1. Be ranked top 90 in RPI
  2. Be ranked top 90 in KenPom, Jeff Sagarin, and BPI
  3. Have already won their conference tournament
  4. Be the highest remaining seed in their conference tournament

This week’s notes:

Three weeks ago, I made this remark:

"The number of points separating UCLA from the last four in is about the same number of points that separates UCLA from Evansville. Sigh."

UCLA is now behind Evansville

The battle for the final one seed is still incredibly close

  • The committee’s job is going to get a lot harder if Valparaiso and San Diego State don’t win their conference tournaments (MONDAY NIGHT UPDATE: sorry, committee)
  • I triple-checked Houston‘s numbers to see if I put in any incorrect data, but no, the Cougars are actually a legitimate bubble team now
  • Syracuse opens the ACC tournament against Pittsburgh; it will probably the most crucial bubble game we see all week
  • Remember that Ben Howland guy? He’s coaching Mississippi State now. You can find him sitting at 98th place, which is actually kind of impressive by Mississippi State basketball standards
