The exodus from the UCLA Basketball team continues, though this time it is a coach that is leaving the program as Ed Schilling is leaving Westwood for Indiana.

It has been a rough few weeks for the UCLA Basketball team after their Sweet 16 loss to Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament.

First Lonzo Ball declares for the NBA Draft (immediately after the game ended), then TJ Leaf declares, and then three other Bruins declare… and now assistant coach Ed Schilling is leaving.

The thing about Schilling’s departure is that before the season ended, many thought a Bruin coach was going to Indiana anyway, though it was not Schilling.

Rumors emerged that Indiana, who parted ways with former Head Coach Tom Crean after the season, had already sought out their next coach to lead them into the future. It was almost expected that UCLA Head Coach Steve Alford was going to be the next coach at IU and just had to wait until the Bruins’ season ended to make it official.

Indiana went in a different direction as they hired Archie Miller (bother of Arizona’s Sean Miller) to take the HC spot. With that, Alford was staying in Westwood, but another coach would head to Bloomington.

It has been reported that Schilling, after four years with UCLA, is going to take on another assistant coaching spot with Miller at Indiana.

Schilling was involved with both player development and defensive strategy. Though UCLA was not proficient on the defensive end, they made several adjustments midseason to take wins over USC, Oregon and Arizona.

Now Alford has to not only take on the task of refilling his roster, but also has to find a replacement for Schilling, one that hopefully can add some more defensive fight to the Bruins’ game. Good luck to Schilling and good luck to Alford who can hopefully bring in a coach that can improve off of Schilling’s work, especially on the defensive end.
