UCLA Loses More Than Just A Game As Stanford Wins 31-10

Jim Mora and UCLA (9-3, 6-3) now have the stigma attached to their program that they cannot win big games. That was evident today when the Bruins lost 31-10 in an effortless game against the Stanford Cardinal (7-5, 5-4). This was suppose to be the game that UCLA was to take down the Cardinal for the first time in six years. Instead, Stanford extended their win streak over the Bruins to seven games. In the Jim Mora era, UCLA is now 4-0 against Stanford, but unlike those games, there seemed to be no urgency in this one.

Things started well for the Bruins as they ran through and scored on Stanford in their first drive, which only took 1:27 seconds. After that, it was all Stanford.

The Cardinal had disallowed anymore touchdowns as they shut them down. The Bruins tried to do their usual vanilla offense which was either a run up the middle, swing pass or a long bomb. Stanford was having none of it. Brett Hundley ended with 146 passing yards and -18 rushing. UCLA was limited to a total of 262 yards.

On defense, the area which many believed UCLA would dominate Stanford, there were no answers to the paced play of the Cardinal. Stanford seemed to have just as predictable offense as UCLA (short run, a long Kevin Hogan run, short pass, occasional long pass), but the Bruins could not stop a thing. For a team that has had trouble scoring lately, Hogan made it look easy against the Bruins. He ended his day with 234 passing yards while the Cardinal had 436 total yards.

With this loss, UCLA also loses:

  • Winning the South Division
  • A trip to the Pac-12 Championship
  • A re-match with Oregon
  • A shot at the Conference Championship
  • A shot at the College Football Playoffs
  • a combined 7gamesagainst Stanford and Oregon

Truly, this will pass, but for right now, it stings a lot.

Go Bruins!
