UCLA basketball are doing things a little bit differently than most expected. They are winning… and by big margins. The Bruins not only go into their Sunday night match-up against Long Beach State on a three game win streak, but take the nation’s leading points per game production into it as UCLA is averaging 101.3. Now honestly, who saw that coming?

Preview: It is hard to gauge the Long Beach State 49ers this early into the season, but so far they are a work in progress. Going 2-2 in their first four games, LBSU has not exactly played a schedule of cupcakes. In their losses, BYU defeated them 95-90 while Xavier smashed them 97-74. In their wins, they smacked around San Francisco State University 74-64 and then beat Kansas State at home on Friday, 69-60. Now it is good they are beating the teams they need to beat, but it could spell trouble for them when they run in to high-powered UCLA.

The 49ers are led by senior guard Mike Caffey who is averaging 18.0 points per game. Their other senior guard is someone that Bruin fans are familiar with as former Bruins Tyler Lamb returns to Pauley Pavilion with his new squad which he is getting 11.5 points, 3 rebounds and 2 assists for. Unerneath the basket, LBSU has senior forward David Samuels who is only the third 49er to average more than 10 points as he is getting 10.0 even and pulling down a team-high 5.3 rebounds. Unfortunately, that seems to be the extent of their weaponry.

UCLA is proving to be a team that is loaded with talent. Sophomore Bryce Alford is adjusting well to his role as point guard as he is leading UCLA in points (21.0) and assists (10.7). Another Bruin is also averaging a double-double as freshman Kevon Looney is scoring 16.3 points and pulling down 12.3 rebounds. Additionally, the three other starters are averaging double figure scoring: Norman Powell (20.3), Isaac Hamilton (13.3) and Tony Parker (14.0).

The Bruins have also been doing a number on the boards as they are 35th in the country in total rebounds with 43.7 per game. Big points, big rebounds and big assists is what this Bruin team is all about. If you have not seen this team yet, you are defienitely missing out.

Prediction: Long Beach State 72 – UCLA 98
