In episode 6 of Pac-12 Network’s ‘The Drive’, we got an inside view of who Brett Hundley is off the field as ‘Hundley the Big Brother’ takes center stage. The show started with Hundley’s injury and a Texas recap to set the tone for the coming game in which it was unknown if Hundley would play. As you know he played and went above and beyond, but they slowly got into that as the show first examined Arizona State’s side of the game.

  • ‘The Drive’ had started the episodeon UCLA’s apparent yearning for big plays. As Hunldey sees it, “Big plays usually happen when everybody does their job.” The Bruins have the capacity to pull off big games, but it is not going to be on ever down. It will happen when everyone is working together.

The pace changed as the focus shifted to the friendship of Hundley, DB Librado Barocio and WR Eldridge Massington. As it was, Hundley and Barocio had grown close when they first got to Westwood. When Massignton came in a year ago, the friendship seemed to gel as they have now become a tight-knit group. This group of friends were doing an “impromptu” film session as they remarked on game film and as brothers do, they gave their fair share of jabs. The funniest part was the “who has it tougher” conversation as Massingotn supported receivers and Barocio defended defensive backs. Hundley wisely stayed out of that debate.

Jim Mora had made a comment about Massingotn that is slowly becoming visible to all UCLA football fans about Massington, “He is as driven a human being as you will find.” We saw some of that in a fear-induced rock dive the three friends embarked on at Malibu Creek Canyon. Hundley, Barocio and Massington, while still having their film session in their living room, examined themselves on this trip earlier that summer. One of the pleasures of Malibu Creek Canyon is the ability to launch yourself off rocks into a pool below. Refreshing, but Massingotn could not get himself to take the plunge. After battling his fear, he took the dive to much celebration. Barocio commented that it took way too long. Hundley agreed,”Yeah, for sure.”

Arizona State Returns To ‘The Drive’

The show shifted to UCLA’s next opponent as they focused on ASU’s preparation. The Sun Devils were on the show last season so they seemed to be naturals on front of the camera. Their introduction to the episode showed Todd Graham giving his speech before the game and wants his team to “do things the Sun Devil way”.

This game was important not just because it was a conference match-up. The show reviewed UCLA’s game against ASU last year, when the Sun Devils won and clinched the Pac-12 South Division. Todd Graham did not really have to stress the importance of this game, although he did, “everybody in the country will be watching this game.” Sure this is just a game, but as he puts it, the goal is to win the Pac-12.

    The Game

Things started rough for UCLA as they went down 17-6 early. Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich had the best advice, “How do you respond now? A little adversity. Forget about it.” From then on, UCLA had control.

After a touchdown to Nate Iese, Jerry Neuheisel said to him “you must like that play.” Iese agreed. That was the same play they ran to get their first touchdown against Texas. That and many more scores had pumped up the Bruins on the sideline. Things got even more exciting when Ishmael Adams made his mark on the game with a 95-yard pick six and 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. UCLA was too much for ASU.

Bercovici’s experience was showing as Graham had tried to tell him that he needs to calm down out there, but it is hard when the Bruins just put 62 on the Sun Devils. This was no longer the ASU’s time in the spotlight, it was UCLA’s. As the show ended, it exited with a comment about the Bruins, yes, they are for real.
