In the midst of the unfortunate flooding going on in Westwood right now, the UCLA football team received some good news in the form of 3-star linebacker Josh Woods giving a verbal commitment to the Bruins on Tuesday night.

The Upland High School senior did not play his junior season, after transferring from Victor Valley High School, because of the transfer rules in California, but that did not stop the offers from coming in. Arizona, Arizona St., Boise St., and Nevada were the schools that defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin, pried Woods from.

Despite playing mostly running back his sophomore year, his performance at the Nike Sparq competition, and his frame, have UCLA coaches excited to use him on the defensive side of the ball. Listed at 6’3″ 200 pounds with a 4.7 40-yard dash (a rumored 4.58 40-yard dash), and almost 33-inch vertical jump, have defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, and others excited to see what Woods can turn into on a college strength and conditioning program.

Woods noted his connection with Ulbrich and  Martin as a big deciding factor in choosing the Bruins and as soon as they called him to offer he jumped right on it. Already loaded on inside linebackers, the Bruins now have a pass-rushing backer to make opposing Pac-12 quarterbacks think twice about holding onto the ball for that extra second.

The sky is the limit for this kid and Bruins fans will be in for a treat during his time on campus. Welcome to Westwood, Josh!
